I was brought up in Northern Ireland, worked for two years in Rwanda, and for most of my career worked at the BBC World Service trying to explain Russia to the world, and - rather more difficult - the world to Russia.

'The Mountain on the Other Side of Light' Series

My old boss at the BBC tried to get me to write a book about my experiences over the years in the World Service – the balance of terror, the advent of détente, the decline and fall of the Soviet gerontocracy, the new age of hope under Gorbachov and Yeltsin… and the collapse back into an even colder war with the rise of Putin… But all retiring journalists try to write such books.  I’ve tried to put it all into a modern-day fable. 

Maybe it’s more likely to be read that way…
